Scotland and Faroe Islands Travel Diary 2023

Yet again we woke to thick fog over Tórshavn.  This was mildly worrying as we had booked a non-refundable boat trip around the nearby island of Hester for that afternoon.  Of course, in the Faroe Islands, you have to accept the weather as it is and try to find the patches of sunny weather.  We began the day exploring the old section of Tórshavn before heading south-west to the small village of Kirkjubøur.  Kirkjubøur features three churches of different eras, the oldest being ruins that were abandoned in 1557.  As we proceeded to the nearby port of Gamlarætt, the clouds began to part, and by the time our speedboat left to circumnavigate Hester Island we were enjoying miraculously sunny weather.  Hester was certainly spectacular, with steep cliffs, coastal stacks, caves and abundant bird life - all very exhilarating when seen from a speedboat.
