Middle East Travel Diary 2010

The second day of the workshops was a long and fairly intense day, although fortunately the temperatures remained cool at about 26°C with overcast skies that broke into intermittent sunshine.

The sessions today covered a range of diverse topics including the UWC application and nomination process, capacity building (or, in other words, fundraising), using UWC intensive transformational learning programs (such as short courses) to build brand recognition, using electronic media, and practicing the techniques of seeking donations and gifts though a series of role plays. The formal program concluded at a little after 7 pm with an extremely moving presentation by Hans von Sponeck (Former UN Assistant Secretary General and UN Humanitarian Aid Co-ordinator in Iraq) on Arab youth and UWCs.

One of the great joys of the meetings in Madaba has been witnessing the input of recent LPCUWC graduates. Especially impressive has been the role played by Ramy Tadros, who graduated from LPCUWC just one year ago in May 2009 and who is now performing a leading role to rebuild the UWC National Committee in Egypt. Ramy was one of those who ‘performed’ in the series of role plays to develop skills in seeking donations, and his warm, affable and mature manner drew particular praise from the organisers. I think LPCUWC can be extremely proud and impressed with the substantial contributions that Ramy is making into the wider UWC Movement.

The long day was followed by a great dinner of Jordanian food at the Haret Jdoudna Restaurant in Madaba. The food was great, but for me the highlight was the surprise of being joined by a group of recent LPCUWC students who happened to be in Jordan for a variety of reasons (see top photo).

And as one would expect when LPC students get together, they quickly became the life of the gathering, standing up and performing several improvised dances to the accompaniment of the live musicians in the restaurant. It was great to catch up with Robert, Andrea, Ahmed, Amr, Jason and Laith, joining Ramy and Andrew who had been attending the UWC meeting.

By the end of the evening it was quite clear which United World College had contributed the most to the vibrancy of a wonderful, fun-filled evening!
