In April 1982, I visited the People’s Republic of China for the first of what subsequently became more than 80 visits. I was fortunate to be in one of the first groups of foreigners permitted to visit China following the tumultuous Cultural Revolution. The trip diaries here focus on the experience of travel rather than my research findings.
