Burma Travel Diary 1984

This morning we inspected the local markets in the neighbouring town of Nyaung U, and the students expressed particular interest in the storage of fish for sale and the large size of the Burmese cheroot cigars being smoked by the women.  After lunch (again at the Mya Yatinar), some free time was allowed, during which many students took the opportunity to hire bicycles for some individual exploration of the ruins near Pagan village.  Then, after visits to the Shwezigon Pagoda (the prototype for all later bell-shaped pagodas in Burma) and a small temple with wall paintings, we left for the 489 kilometre return flight to Rangoon, yet another experience of Burma Airways in a Fokker F-27.
