Europe 1987

After a speedy start so we weren’t too late for breakfast, we booked for the Sound of Music tour (because that is what you’re supposed to do when you visit Salzburg, and especially when your daughter’s name is Liesl).  We were collected at 9:00am, and although the weather was overcast and drizzly, it slowly fined up during the course of the day.

We had an Australian tour guide with a lovely sense of humour and thoroughly enjoyed our three and a half hour tour of various places where scenes had been filmed for the Sound of Music – the glass gazebo, the lake, the trees where the children played, the balcony where Maria stood with the Baroness watching the Captain, Nonnberg Abbey, the church at Mondsee, and so on, plus a stop at St Gilgen where we had morning tea of apple strudel and coffee.

In the afternoon, we walked around the old city, including Mirabellgarten (formal gardens around a historic palace building, and of course the steps where “Do-Re-Mi” was filmed for the Sound of Music) and the main shopping street in the area, Getreidgasse.

After dinner, we had a lovely dusk walk up the hill to Festung Hohensalzberg (Hohensalzburg Fortress), and although the atmosphere was starting to become misty in the evening air, the views across the city were simply magical.
