Hidden Turkmenistan

One of the least known countries in the world, Turkmenistan has changed dramatically from its former identity as a backwater of the Soviet Union.  An eclectic mix of Islam, socialism and nationalism, Turkmenistan is moving along its own distinctive path to development under the leadership of its President, Saparmurat Niyazov, also known as “Turkmenbashi the Great”.  His “sacred” book, ‘Ruhnama’ is found everywhere in the country, and is even featured on hour-long readings on evening television.

In July 2006 I had the privilege of visiting Turkmenistan.  This gallery of 99 images is a small taste of that great experience!

A daily diary of my travels can be seen HERE.

A gallery of religious art and architecture in Turkmenistan and nearby countries can be seen HERE.
