Burma 1984

We reached Butterworth shortly after 7:00am this morning and transferred to a State Railways of Thailand second-class sleeper.  After travelling through the Kedah “rice bowl” of northern Malaysia. a region of traditional subsistence rice cultivation with widespread use of water buffaloes, small fields, picturesque villages and steeply rising karst limestone hills, we reached the Thai border at midday.

Border formalities were completed in an hour and a half, and the train left (without warning!) for the journey through southern Thailand.  Compared with Malaysia, Thailand struck the group immediately as being less wealthy but more regulated (every second person on the train seemed to be a gun-carrying official).  However, any qualms were quickly forgotten when we discovered that the train had a shower!
