Exploring Northern Ethiopia
Exploring Northern Ethiopia
Sunday, 8 June 2008
I have just spent the first week of my summer break in northern Ethiopia with my youngest son, Andrew. He has just finished his IB Diploma examinations, and this is an opportunity for us to spend some quality father-and-son time together before he begins university. Like me, he enjoys travelling to unusual but geographically interesting destinations, and so far we have had a great time together exploring the historical circuit of northern Ethiopia. So far, we have managed to achieve our aim of supporting only local enterprises where we have travelled - with the exception of some much needed bottles of Coke or Pepsi to relieve dehydration.
I have been writing a daily travel diary for uploading to the web so that friends and family can follow our travels while we are still on the road. I have been faithfully writing the diary each day, but alas there were very few stable internet access facilities in northern Ethiopia. Perhaps I should not have been surprised. We are now back in Addis Ababa for a couple of days before leaving for southern Ethiopia (where the internet access will, I am told, be even rarer - just like the electricity!). However, I have used our time in Addis Ababa to upload the diary entries for the past week, and they are now online.
I will continue to write the diary each day and upload it whenever I can get internet access. The aim is to do so daily, but the ‘worst case scenario’ is that they may not appear until we return to Addis Ababa next weekend. You can read about our adventures as we travel by clicking HERE.
By the way, Andrew has been taking some great photographs during our travels, and a selection of 60 of his great images from northern Ethiopia can be seen HERE.
