A city of almost 2 million people, Warsaw was obliterated during World War II, and then rose again from the rubble as a modern socialist city.  Its historical areas have been painstakingly rebuilt.  After the fall of communism in 1989, Warsaw quickly transformed itself into a thriving chic European city.
