With a culturally rich and diverse history of over 600 years, Mostar is a gem of a city.  With a population of almost 100,000 people, it is the largest city in Herzegovina.  Mostar suffered some of the most prolonged and fiercest fighting during the break up of Yugoslavia, and at one time it was feared that Mostar might emerge as a tragically divided city in the way that Berlin was for many years.  The fighting almost totally destroyed the old part of the city, including the famous and iconic Old Bridge.  Fortunately, the Old Bridge was rebuilt and opened again in 2004.  However, the main road that formed the front line between the Croats and the Muslims remains a haunting alleyway of destroyed buildings even now, more than 12 years after the fighting finished.
