Turkmenistan 2015

Turkmenistan                                          2015

Turkmenistan is one of the least known, yet most fascinating, countries in the world.  Sometimes referred to as “the North Korea of Central Asia” because of its isolation and history of personality cults, its past includes guest appearances by Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Tamerlane as well as Imperial Britain and Tsarist, Bolshevik and Soviet Russia.

I first visited Turkmenistan in July 2006.  Then, in May 2015, I returned to do field research for a book I was writing at the time.

This diary contains some observations and photos from my return trip in 2015.
