A Great Dinner with a Rather Long Name
A Great Dinner with a Rather Long Name
Saturday, 1 November 2008
The dinner I attended last night would have to be strong contender for the prize in any competition for the dinner with the longest name. It was “The Combined United World Colleges Hong Kong Committee Limited Legal Establishment Inauguration Dinner and United World Colleges Graduates Organisation (Hong Kong) Limited Annual Dinner”, held the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce Members’ Club in Connaught Road, Central.
The United World Colleges Hong Kong National Committee has been in existence in Hong Kong for more than 35 years, although not as a legal entity. Over these 35 years, the National Committee played an important role in raising funds for scholarships, establishing Li Po Chun United World College, and furthering the goals of the UWC Movement. However, the recent legal incorporation of the United World Colleges Hong Kong Committee Limited should help in further engaging UWC alumni as well as those connected with Li Po Chun UWC to work towards the wider objectives of the UWC Movement. It should certainly assist in attracting much-needed donations, especially those which will be directed to helping needy young Hong Kong people gain access to a UWC education.
The dinner to launch the new UWC Hong Kong Committee was combined with the annual UWC Graduates’ Dinner, which has been held for many years as a means of bringing together graduates from all the UWCs who happen to be living in Hong Kong. In the tradition of the annual Graduates Organisation dinners, a very successful auction was held was raise scholarship funds.
During the dinner there were several speeches, but for most people present the undoubted highlight was the presentation and performances by current students of Li Po Chun UWC. These included African dances, Latin American dances, and an excellent illustrated presentation of life in a UWC from a student perspective by Ana Gabriela Caballeros Pira, a 2nd Year student from Guatemala.
I think it is fair to say that the new Hong Kong Committee is off to a great start, even if the name of the dinner was only slightly shorter than my far-too-long speech :-)
The photos below give some idea (I hope) of the great atmosphere of this wonderful and dynamic evening. As usual in my blogs, all images can be clicked to enlarge.
