About 10 kilometres north of Siauliai, which is 140 kilometres north of Kaunas (Lithuania’s fourth largest city) is the extraordinary Hill of Crosses (Kryziu kalnas).  It is a two-humped hillock covered with tens of thousands of crosses.  Some are devotional, while others are memorials for Lithuanians deported to Siberia during Soviet times.  On at least three occasions, Soviet authorities bulldozed the site, only to have the crosses spring up again.  It is a place of devotion and pilgrimage for devout people from Lithuania and other nearby countries.
